Mundra, located about 50 kms from Anjar, Kutch district, is the largest private port in India. This port is a great inspiration for many as it revived brilliantly after the earthquake in 2001 completely ravaged the district. The port is well known for salt and spice trading and lately is known for tie-dye and block-print textiles. The port however is practically unusable today leaving a small local fishing craft which still navigates its silted waterways up the river.
The town is populated with around 60,000 people most of which are migrants. The city is known for its Dabeli and Kadak. GADAASAR is a major attraction due to its entertaining qualities. There is a well known Mahadev Temple which has memorials of several sailors some of which had advised the Sultan of Zanzibar and some had even guided Vasco da Gama to India. Kacchi fishermen worship Saint Darya Pir who had come to Mundra from Bukhara in the year 1660. He had exposed the locals to Islam and they have built a shrine dedicated to the saint post his death. The culturally diverse port attracts various visitors to this shrine to this day. The Mughal Emperor in his fondness of the patron had built a gate in his honour which to this day is called the Mughal Gate.
Mundra is now home to two thermal power plants headed by Tata Power and Adani Power. The Mundra Special Economic Zone was incorporated in 2003 and after its merge with GAPL in 2006 is renamed to “Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited.”
